Marilyn Frances (Williams) Mitchell, 89, passed away on September 4, 2021. She passed peacefully surrounded by her family. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 2, at 2:00 PM, at Wages & Sons Memorial Chapel, 1040 Main St, Stone Mountain, GA (masks are required).
Marilyn was born in Macon, GA, the daughter of the late Mary Luella (Smith) & William Atwell Williams, and was sister to the late Eugenia Oldham and Sylvia Parrott. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 58 years, Howard Leon Mitchell. She is survived by her children Lea Ann (Mitchell) English of Atlanta, GA; Howard Mitchell Jr. (Connie) of Seattle, WA; and Philip Mitchell (Angie) of Kennesaw, GA. She also leaves behind three adoring granddaughters Jordan Mitchell, Ashton Mitchell and Claudia Mitchell.
At the age of 17, Marilyn enrolled in the Grady Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, from where she graduated in 1953. Married shortly thereafter, she supported her husband Howard as he pursued a degree at Georgia Tech by working as an RN at the Georgia Tech infirmary. She took time off from nursing to raise their children but returned to nursing in several roles before ending her career at the same GT infirmary. She was an avid bridge player throughout her adult life and believed that playing bridge would stimulate the brain as we grow older. She also had a passion for and collected antique glassware from the A.H. Heisey Company. Over the years, other hobbies included cross stitching and antiquing, and more recently she joined Corvette Atlanta with her children to celebrate her husband’s love of classic muscle cars.
The family requests that donations be made to the Georgia Nurses Association in lieu of flowers – https://georgianurses.nursingnetwork.com/page/75151-donate-to-gnf.
