James E. West, a kind-hearted and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2025, at the age of 82 in LaGrange, Georgia. His life was filled with love, community service, and an unwavering dedication to family and friends.

Born on October 13, 1942, in Louisiana, James earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from NorthEast Louisiana University. His career led him to serve the State of Georgia in the Office of Planning and Budget until his retirement, where his expertise and integrity made a lasting impact.

James had a deep passion for antiques, a love for the arts, and an abiding interest in community service. He was an active member of the Atlanta Theatre Organ Society and the Metro Atlanta Civilian Club. His open-hearted nature and keen intellect made him a trusted voice in the many community organization boards on which he served.

A world traveler and lifelong learner, James embraced life with curiosity and compassion. His “open-door” policy made everyone feel welcomed and valued, and he was never afraid to share his thoughtful opinions. Above all, James cherished his family. He exemplified love and dedication when he stepped in to guide and raise his brother’s children after his passing. His generosity and wisdom were a foundation for generations of his extended family.

James was a man of faith and an active member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, where his kindness and humility enriched the church community. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert F. and Lela Evis West; his siblings Margaret Laughman (Crayton), Robert V. West (Gwen), Bobby R. West, and William West; as well as several beloved nieces, nephews, and great-great-nephews.

James is survived by multiple generations of family, including cousins, nieces, nephews, and great and great-great relatives, as well as his devoted nephew and primary caregiver, Randy West. The family extends special thanks to Reg Bunch for his unwavering support and love for James and sincere gratitude to the Wellstar West Georgia Hospice staff for their compassionate care.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 to 10:45 AM on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 1790 Lavista Road, Atlanta, GA 30329, with a funeral service following at 11:00 AM. A burial service will take place at Mulhern Memorial Park in Monroe, Louisiana, in May 2025.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta, GA, or the Atlanta Theatre Organ Society.

James will be remembered for his wisdom, compassion, and the love he generously shared with all who knew him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those whose lives he touched.
