Agustin "Augie" Jesus Rodriguez

agustin rodriguez

August 22, 1957 ~ March 31, 2023

Born in: Brooklyn, NY
Resided in: Lilburn, GA

Agustin “Augie” Jesus Rodriguez passed at his home in Lilburn, Georgia, on March 31, 2023. He is survived by his wife, Cristina Foley, and two cousins, Yanza Wilkey and Roger Rodriguez. Augie was a scholar and an artist. His dreams of attaining a PhD in history were thwarted when his major professor retired before he could complete his dissertation. Not one to give up on anything he turned his focus to another passion, art, quickly becoming a highly respected sculptor and painter of miniatures. He ran his own business sculpting historical and Special Ops figures for over 20 years before transitioning into a finance job at Bank of America. In 2021 he retired and got the opportunity to yet again return to the bench, this time for fun, sculpting and painting any and everything from historical figures to dinosaurs to ordinance. Hockey and IMSA racing were his other passions. For many years, he himself was a hocky goalie, the only position to play, as he would say, because you were on the ice for 60 minutes and got to wear all the pads. A proficient polyglot, he spoke English, Spanish, Italian, French, and even a little Japanese. Though he lived most of his life in the South, he was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Cuban immigrant parents and was very proud of both his city and his heritage. Trying to describe Augie in a few words is impossible. He was a loving husband, had a razor-sharp wit, was quick to anger but even quicker to forgive. The world is so much smaller now that he has left it.

    • Thank you, Penny. You are so right. He was a walking encyclopedia with a sense of humor that left you smiling. He had more knowledge in his little finger than I do in my entire brain. He loved talking with people outside where he could truly be himself (believe it or not he was actually restrained inside). He touched so many lives.

  14. Cris, I’m deeply saddened to hear of Augie’s passing, he’s a most excellent person and a good friend.  I very much enjoyed our daily chit chats, and always walked away feeling that my funny bone had been tickled or my brain had been challenged.  Vaya con dios mi compadre.

    • Ben, you were his compadre par excellence. He loved talking with you and was so delighted you were learning Spanish. You were one of the few people who could surprise him. He considered you a brother.

  19. Cris, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I know that Augie cherished you and that the two of you shared so much love. Although Augie could appear rough on the outside, it was just because he was so passionate about doing the right thing. On the inside he was just a big softie and would do anything to help anyone. My thoughts, prayers and love are with you and please know that I consider you a friend so please let me know if you ever need anything. I’m sorry that I won’t be able to attend the service this weekend due to a minor surgery scheduled tomorrow but I will be thinking about you.

    • Thank you so much, Shelley. Your description of Augie is so accurate. Anyone that knew him, saw how much he cared. When he did something, he did it 1000%. I hope all goes well for you and that you recover quickly. I know you will be there in spirit.

  20. Cris, As you know I first met Augie when he came to work at Ansley Mall Bookstore in the late 70s. Wow! His presence, both intellectually AND physically, kept the place rocking! We became instant, fast friends. He has been a part of mine and Ron’s lives ever since. He was Uncle Augie to our two kids, he and I shared a love of art and history, and he and Ron developed this ridiculous hockey-related friendship going to Gladiators games. They even let me go with them from time to time! Sunday afternoons would find them bringing hockey and the world into proper order.
Now when I make his renown pork tenderloin he will be in the kitchen.
Cris, may The Lord bring you peace in His time, and prayers for the repose of Agustin’s soul.

    • Thank you so much, Marie. His stories about Ansley always had me rolling. Especially the one about the lady looking for the “green” book. No title, no author, all she knew was it was green. Your family was his family. Ron was his brother and your kids his kids. He was as invested in them as any parent, thrilled at how well they have done for themselves. Thank you for your prayers and support, and especially for taking him into your family so fully.

  21. Cris, I am so saddened to hear of the loss of Augie. He was truly a one of a kind, such a deep special soul. He could come across as gruff at times, but that couldn’t have been further from the truth. Always so interesting to chat with and we would complain to each other about this dang GA summer humidity and heat. He will be missed. Thoughts and prayers for you.

    • Thank you, Jeana. Above all he was Latin, passionate in every aspect. If he cared you knew it. He was nothing but genuine. And you are so right, if the temps were 32° year round he would have been happy. He touched so many lives.

  22. Hey Cris it is Cindy, so sorry Auggie is gone. He was always a laugh in our day. Just to funny to brighten up some ones day when things are going down. We are all happy he could be there for us and you also.

    • Thank you, Cindy. He definitely kept you in stitches with his wry sense of humor. He always said what the rest of us were only thinking.

    • Thank you, Tony. I will always be thankful to you for the lovely orange cupcakes you made for Augie. He was so delighted to get them and raved about them for months afterwards. Your talent and generosity were never in short supply. He truly appreciated that about you.

  23. CandleImageDear Cris: I am so saddened to hear of Augie’s passing. Please accept my sincere condolence and I pray his memories will bring you peace and comfort. Keeping you in thoughts and prayers.

    • Thank you, Sarah. You were Augie’s compatriot in arms for years and he loved working with you. I truly appreciate your condolences, which help keep me going through this difficult time.
