BUTLER, Col. Edward L. Butler, of Stone Mountain, GA formerly a native son of Ravenna, Ohio, joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942. He served under seven Presidents before retiring in 1976. While on active duty he held every enlised rank in the Marine Corps before becoming an officer in 1951. During WW II he served in the South Pacific and China in 1945. Later he also served in Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam. Some of Col. Butler’s personal decorations include the Meritorious service medal, Bronze Star with combat “V” , Naval Commendation Medal with Combat “V” and the good conduct medal. His body will be cremated with burial in Virginia beside his beloved wife Ruth and son Robert. Col. Butler’s survived by his son Larry of Chamblee, GA; step sister, Ora Cantor of Ohio; sister in law, Edith Holloway of Fredericksburg, VA; as well as friend and companion Kathryn Smith and extended family of Gwen Farrin and Butch Smith of Georgia.
