With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of James Michael Wilbanks, lovingly known as Mike or Big Mike, on March 3, 2025, as a resident of Georgia. Born on August 17, 1935, in Atlanta, GA, Mike lived a life filled with love, laughter, and dedication to his family, friends, and community.

Mike proudly served in the United States Navy, carrying with him a strong sense of duty and commitment throughout his life. He attended San Jose Junior College and John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, though his true calling led him elsewhere. His career spanned nearly three decades as an Insurance Service Underwriter from 1970 to 1999. Before that, he served as a Deputy Sheriff for DeKalb County in the 1970s and 80s, a role that exemplified his dedication to service and protection.

A man of many passions, Mike found joy in golf, fishing, hunting, playing cards with friends, and working on his cars, home, and yard. He had a deep love for music, especially Rock ‘N’ Roll and Blues, and could often be found listening to his favorite tunes. His devotion to UGA football and his faith in Jesus were central to his life, guiding his actions and relationships.

Above all, Mike was a man of love, generosity, and humor. He always made time for his family and friends, putting their needs before his own. He treasured every moment with his son and grandchildren, and they, in turn, cherished his sense of humor, warm smile, and unwavering support. His caring nature extended to his neighbors, his church, and his community, always giving his time to those in need.

Mike is preceded in death by his father, James Benson Wilbanks, and mother, Tommie Lou Chestnut. He is survived by his beloved son, Michael Benson Wilbanks; granddaughter, Kathryn Elizabeth Wilbanks; grandson, Warren Michael Wilbanks; brother, Thomas Lou Wilbanks, Sr.; nephew, Thomas Lou Wilbanks, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Holley Walburn; and great-nephew, Logan Wilbanks.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Hospice Foundation of America and the American Heart Association in honor of Mike’s memory.

Mike’s legacy of love, kindness, and laughter will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit and impact will never be forgotten.
